that the economic impact of such a work stoppage is disaster. joining me is nbc's ron mott. for folks not following the story, how did we get here? >> reporter: folks haven't because they're paying attention to the fiscal cliff. this was lurking in the shadows and today moved the ball down the field for 30 days and may be talking about a strike again in 30 days but the big issue here was this so-called container royalty that the shipping companies pay to the union members who actually the guys and men and women offloading the big ships and the containers with things like tvs and shoes and clothing, they get a royalty based on the weight of all of those containers and the shipping companies are looking to try to control costs and increase their profits and the biggest sticking point. in the agreement that they have announced today for the 30-day extension they're saying they reached agreement in principle on the royalties which was the biggest stumbling block here so i think it's probably safe to say in 30 days to button up all the little issues here, minor issues, secondary issues and move forward
and compromise. >> let me play what senator ron johnson said on cnn just this morning regarding the president and what he says the president is not understanding here. let's play it. >> this president just simply doesn't understand that, and so as a result he punishes success. we put at risk the economic growth that we really need to create the jobs, to create the revenue we need. >> you hear some republicans, a senator saying that the president does not somehow get economic growth. a lot of them focusing in on stimulus money the white house wants as a part of this deal. what is your response? you've got polls that indicated the exit polling right after the election that most americans were in support of people who make over $250,000 paying a higher tax. they have confidence in this economy, perhaps the reason that your party saw success in the election. what do you make of this notion that, again, some republicans say the president doesn't get small business or economic growth somehow? >> well, i think the american people roundly rejected that. they think the president gets it. that's why th
saying, quote, we are going to take you out. nbc's ron mott has the latest of lansing. >> reporter: good afternoon, tamron. protest is the word of the day. they're voicing opposition to this legislation that would make michigan the 24th right to work state in the country. now, the governor rick snyder is expected to sign this legislation when and if it hits his desk. a lot of folks here believe that this is a back door attempt at trying to limit democracy in the state of michigan. you can hear some of the protests behind me and union workers here believe it's a direct attempt at trying to break the backs of the unions as i should say and a lot of folks believe that this is payback for the result of the election on november 6th. the re-election of president obama. i spoke with the head of the chamber of commerce here in michigan. he believes this is going to be beneficial to the state. helps him go around the country and around the world promoting jobs in michigan. this will make business more pro-friendly here in michigan. now, some of the workers here today believe it's an issue of fair
